Austin Remote ServerTo access to Faculty software via what Microsoft calls ‘Remote
Desktop’. This is installed in Windows 7, Vista and XP – both Home and Professional
editions. For earlier versions of Windows or Mac computers, what is called ‘RDP client’ can be installed from Client for Windows XP:
To run it, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, and then click Remote Desktop Connection.
When you run it you will be confronted with a window which asks you the name of the computer. To use the Faculty’s Austin server, you must type in austin.ad.econ.cam.ac.uk Once you click Connect you should see the login screen. Enter your username in the form AD\abc12 (where abc12 is your normal Cambridge user id) Initial passwords for all users are in the following form: ECON (in caps) followed by the first and last digits of your username in lowercase (a2 for user abc12) Note: There is a known problem with this initial log in and mac computers. If you're using a mac and are having problems with the log in please contact econ-itsupport@lists.cam.ac.uk. Screen Shot of the Austin desktop. There are links to all software installed on Austin on the desktop. There are two ways to exit the Austin server once you are finished. 1. Log off. This will finish your session, by closing all open programs and logging you off the server. 2. Dissconnect. This will dissconnect your connection to the server but leave your session running on it. You can use this if you are running a simulation program which takes a long time. When you log back into Austin you will see your desktop and any programs left running, just as you left them. Please note: If you have activated the Local Drives option before you connected to Austion, when you open Start > Computer you should see lots of extra drives available. The top set of drives belong to the Austin server, but any under the Other Drives section are the drives on your laptop or pc. This means you can save directly from Austin to your personal machine. If you haven't activated the Local Drives, click here to see the instructions. Problems
