Econ-Centenary Server (this service is no longer available)

Please see the new instructions for running the Faculty software remotely

Thanks to some generous donations by alumni we are now able to offer general access to Faculty software via what Microsoft calls ‘Remote Desktop’. This is installed in Windows Vista and XP – both Home and Professional editions. For earlier versions of Windows  what is called ‘RDP client’ can be installed from

Client for Windows XP:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=6E1EC93D-BDBD-4983-92F7-479E088570AD&displaylang=en

Client 2 for Mac OS X:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx?pid=Mactopia_RDC&fid=803F9438-8DF3-490F-92C6-0E0F92787DB8#viewer

To run it, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, click Communications, and then click Remote Desktop Connection.

When you run it you will be confronted with a window which asks you the name of the computer. To use the Faculty’s Centenary server, you must type in econ-centenary.econ.cam.ac.uk

The first time you run this you should click Options, which expands the window with some more settings. There is more information about these settings here.

Once you click Connect you should see a welcome screen. Click 'ok'. Then you will be presented with the normal login screen which you see when logging on to the Faculty machines in the basement and in the Marshall Library.

Screen Shot of the Centenary desktop:

To log out from the Centenary server you must click the Logout icon or Start then Logoff. You should NOT normally use the X button at the top of the screen as this will leave you logged in. Only use this if you are running a simulation program which takes a long time.

Please note:

  1. You should not save files on the server’s C: drive, as these files will have to be moved every time you login and logout, and will increase your login/logout times. Use only your F: drive to save files.

Problems

  • Please note that Remote Desktop does not work across the Lapwing wireless service.
  • If you have any problems with the service or need help, please email econ-itsupport@lists.cam.ac.uk or ring extension 48160
