Mathematica laptop installation

Our licence allows you to install Mathematica on any laptop or home computer belonging to staff and students of the Faculty of Economics.

Installation Media

You can borrow a cd image from the IT Support Team, by coming to room 53 in the Faculty building or if you are off site you will first need to download a CD image and write it to a CD. Most CD writing software programs (Nero, Sonic) will have a Burn Image to disk function. If you are in the Faculty on a Faculty (non-PWF) desktop, you can access the ISO images at

If you are outside the Faculty, download the image using the link below

www.econ.cam.ac.uk/intranet/computing/Mathematica_8.0.0_WIN_MachineSpecific.iso

or a Mac version is available at:

www.econ.cam.ac.uk/intranet/computing/Mathematica_8.0.0_OSX_MachineSpecific.dmg

or a Linux version is available at:

www.econ.cam.ac.uk/intranet/computing/Mathematica_7.0.1_LINUX_MachineSpecific.iso

After you have created your CD, it should run automatically when you close the drive. If not, run setup.exe from it.

Getting a Licence / Activation Key

Mathematica 8.0

Wolfram have significantly changed how the licencing works for Mathematica 8.0. "Activation keys" are now used.

  1. Go to the Wolfram User Portal with a web-browser
  2. Login or Create a login, with your University email address (@cam.ac.uk or @SOMETHING.cam.ac.uk), and request an activation key for the operating system (OSX, Windows, Linux) that you need
  3. You should receive an email with the activation key. This key is "temporary" and will last for a few weeks. The extension may not happen immediately. The extension should happen within a week, and you will be notified by email. The key should be extended without any further action from you. If this all fails then please apply for a new activation key once the current one you have expires and that should get approved.
  4. Download the media/executable, for example by using the links on this page, above
  5. Install Mathematica and enter the activation key - it should just work
