BORROWING AND RETURNING

In order to borrow, items must be presented to the Loans Counter together with your University Library Card or, alternatively, you can use the self-issue system. Please return all borrowed items to the Loans Counter (or the Library Book Drop when the Library is closed). Do not return them to the shelves as this will result in loans remaining uncancelled, overdue reminders being sent, and fines being charged. Readers will be asked to return items to the shelves once the loans have been cancelled. Items used in the Library should also be returned to the shelves.

When the main Library doors are locked it will be possible to return books to an external book drop

Your Account

It is possible to use the Newton catalogue's Your Account facility to:

  • See which items you have out on loan and when they are due for return
  • See what fines and other fees you may have incurred
  • Renew your books
To renew an item you have on loan, click in the Renew? check box beside the Renew Items button. Remember, you will be unable to renew books if:

    • They are already overdue
    • You have outstanding fines
    • They have been requested by another borrower
    • You have reached your maximum renewal limit
    • They are Open Shelf vacation loan books
    • They have Reserve Item status (term time)
    • They are books borrowed for the vacation

Please remember that if you are trying to renew your books online you should always give yourself sufficient time to return them to the Library if, for any reason, you are unsuccessful in your attempts to renew them. Failure to do so will result in fines being charged.

  • Check the progress of requests you have placed for books:
Your Account will tell you which items you have placed requests on (Requests Pending) and your position in the holding queue (Queue Position) if the item has more than one request on it. It will also tell you which of your requests have been returned to the Library and are ready for collection (Requests Available).

To use the Your Account facility you will need to go to the Newton catalogue which can be accessed from the Marshall Library web page. You should then click on Your Account. Enter the 5 character code beginning with 'V' from the back of your blue University Card followed by your surname and click 'Login'.
