LIBRARY RULES

Our rules are based on obvious common-sense. They are aimed at ensuring that the Marshall Library is a suitable place for study and that as many books as possible are available for all readers.

  1. No talking is permitted in the Library
  2. With the exception of bottles of water, students will be charged a penalty of £3 if they are found with food or drink in the Library
  3. Readers may not borrow books if they have overdue items or outstanding fines on their record. A reader's ability to graduate may be affected if they have overdue items or unpaid fines at the end of their course.
  4. Readers may only borrow books on their own library card and must show their card whenever they wish to borrow. Readers wishing to borrow books on another card must show a letter of authorization from the owner of that card, whatever the circumstances.
N.B. Remember that you are responsible for any items borrowed on your card.
  5. Readers should report lost books immediately. You will be charged the full replacement cost of the book plus a £5 administration charge. Fines on the lost book will continue to accrue until the Library receives payment for the lost item. The replacement cost will not be refunded if the book is subsequently found. Unavailable out-of-print books will be charged at a flat rate of £50.
  6. Anyone writing in, marking and/or damaging Library books will be charged the full replacement cost of the item plus a £5 administration charge (per item), and will face a possible ban from the Library. Payment does not entitle the reader to keep the damaged item(s). Readers will not be permitted to borrow until all replacement costs have been paid. Unavailable out-of-print books will be charged at a flat rate of £50.
  7. Readers are requested to take special care of books on wet days. The replacement cost will be charged for water-damaged books.
  8. All books must be issued` at the Loans Counter before being taken from the Library. Anyone repeatedly trying to leave with unissued books will face a possible ban from the Library.
We have a limited budget. Losses through theft and vandalism mean that we have less money to spend on new books and extra copies of heavily-used texts. In some cases the items are irreplaceable.
  9. Mobile phones must be switched off before being brought into the Library.
  10. Books should not be taken out of the United Kingdom without the Librarian's permission.
