Economic &
Social Research Council Studentships (ESRC)
Applicants who wish to be
considered for an ESRC award do not
need to
complete
an ESRC application form unless the Faculty of Economics contacts
them. Please
indicate on the Graduate Application form (GRADSAF) if you
wish to be considered for Research Council funding.
The Faculty is allocated
a number of ESRC quota
studentships
each year. UK and EU students are eligible to receive ESRC
quota
studentships (see ESRC
Guidance Notes for Applicants
for eligibility
details).
These studentships can be
awarded either to students admitted
to the MPhil Economic Research or to students admitted directly to the
PhD after having
completed a suitable Master’s course. In the former
case,
the studentships
cover both the MPhil year and three further years working on the PhD (a
so-called 1+3 award). In the latter case, the studentships
cover
three years of work on the PhD (a +3 award).
The Faculty of Economics
will consider all eligible applicants
and will
allocate its quota studentships to the strongest candidates.
Successful candidates will be contacted
by the Faculty of Economics and asked to complete a quota nomination
form.
The Faculty of Economics
is also allowed to enter one
candidate for
the ESRC open studentship competition.
Candidates for the quota studentships who are unsuccessful will
automatically
be considered for the open competition. The candidate who is
entered
by the Faculty of Economics for the open competition will also be
contacted
by the Faculty of Economics and asked to complete a application form.
For further information about ESRC studentships, see the University
Graduate studies Prospectus and
the
ESRC Society Today pages.
